A Heart Like His: Devotional Journal
Published in Hardcover by Broadman & Holman Publishers (March, 2001)
Author: Beth Moore
Average review score:

Excellent study of the life of David!
This was the first Beth Moore Bible study I did and what an introduction! This is tied with "Jesus, the One and Only" as my favorite study of hers, with "A Woman's Heart: God's Dwelling Place" being second. "A Heart Like His" goes through the ups and downs of David's life, from childhood through death from old age and examines why the Bible calls him "a man after God's own heart." It was inspiring for me to learn about this man, who lived an imperfect life (think Bathsheba, Uriah, etc.), and was still a friend of God because he loved God in his heart. Most of the stories were familiar, but the author brings a completely different viewpoint and depth to the text which I have never experienced. Beth Moore delves deeply into the original Hebrew texts and gives a much more complete picture of scripture than reading it in English ever could. She has an inspired understanding of the Word of God. Although Beth is Southern Baptist, her studies are truly ecumenical. At my Presbyterian (PCUSA) church, we are about to start our fifth study of hers and I know the Episcopal church in town has done several of her studies, too. I've never met anyone who was disappointed in one of her studies. I HIGHLY recommend you view the video tape series along with the workbook. I would add my husband is currently doing this study and is enjoying it very much. I'm nor exactly sure why Beth Moore primarily limits her ministry to women, but I'm certainly not going to question her calling!

Helping Skills for the Nonprofessional Counselor
Published in Paperback by St Anthony Messenger Press (May, 1992)
Authors: Joseph Moore and James Moore
Average review score:

Excellent book - we use in all our trainings!
Wecurrently conduct an eight week training session for telephone volunteers desiring to participate in answering a compassionate, nonjudgemental 24-hour hotline regarding abortion alternatives. We have used this book for the past several years - we are 'nonprofessionals' and this book is well suited to our needs. Bad news! - it's being discontinued -(we can't find a copy anywhere) and we are feeling even more 'nonprofessional' as we approach a training without helping skills.

This book is one of the most helpful sources to understanding and looking at Henry Moore's world, work and learning his regard for the objects of reality he transformed into his sculptures. It is truly amazing and it is the actual sketchbook of his very own sheep. It is a wonderful book.

The Hidden America: Social Problems in Rural America for the Twenty-First Century
Published in Hardcover by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Pr (April, 2001)
Author: Robert M. Moore
Average review score:

Required reading for the 21st century
To quote the introduction, "This book...provides insight into rural social problems..." It does much more. In addition to particular societal problems, authors address problems unique to various racial and ethnic groups. Anyone concerned about people; about education, homelessness, substance abuse, economic development, African Americans and American Indians in rural America should read this book. Excellent textbook choice. Important and interesting reading for anyone who wants to be informed about current conditions and future trends.

His Lordship's Arsenal
Published in Paperback by Critics Choice Paperbacks (March, 1988)
Author: Christopher Moore
Average review score:

where's the mystery?
Just didn't like it. Never was interested and couldn't see where the story was headed for the longest time. Chapter 17 seemed to be a better starting point for the book. One through sixteen was just longwinded stage-setting. All those baseline details of plot could've been shoved into one chapter. Disappointed, disappointed, dissappointed. I thought publishing companies had someone read the story first to see if it was worth publishing. I would be extremely surprized if this was a profitable venture.
